Roy Gregory Hiers

​Roy Gregory Hiers, 70, passed away at his home on February 20, 2026. A man of deep roots and even deeper kindness, Roy was born in Metter, Georgia, on January 7, 1956, and was raised in the community of Excelsior by his beloved grandparents, J. Aubrey Hiers and Janie Lou Salter Hiers.

A proud 1974 graduate of Metter High School, Roy worked as an Ironworker and also did some farming throughout his life. While he was a man of hard work, he was best known for his character. Roy truly had a "heart of gold" and would do everything in his power to help someone in need, never hesitating to lend a hand to a neighbor or a friend in a bind.

​He was preceded in death by his mother, Joanne Hiers Mead; his sisters, Mary Ann Ewert and Kathy Sconyers; and the grandparents who shaped the man he became, J. Aubrey and Janie Lou Salter Hiers.

​His legacy of generosity and quiet strength lives on through his only son, Johnnie Gregory Hiers. He is also survived by his loyal dog and best friend, Speck; his brothers, John Sconyers and Gerald Sconyers; his sister, Barbara Bolton; and a community of family and friends who will long remember his helping hand.

A Memorial Service will be held in The Chapel of Wood Funeral Home on Saturday February 28, 2026, at 2 pm. The family will receive friends beginning at 1 pm.
